Chinese Taipei contributes USD 1 million to Human Security and Environmental priorities in APEC

Hiroshima, Japan, 23 February 2010 - Chinese Taipei has contributed USD 1 million to APEC. Of this amount, half is directed toward human security and half toward energy efficiency and other environment-related projects.

Both human security and energy/environmental issues are priorities for APEC 2010 Japan.

Human security is fundamental to new economic growth. At the same time, APEC Economic Leaders have charged economies to ensure that growth is consistent with sustainable development.

Sharing information and experiences and building capacity will be a significant contributing factor in the ability of economies to fulfill this lofty mandate. And through this contribution, explains APEC Senior Official Mr. Paul Wen-Liang Chang, Chinese Taipei will support regional capacity building.

"Capacity-building has been a priority for APEC," says Ambassador Muhamad Noor, Executive Director at the APEC Secretariat. "And this year, one of our core objectives is to see that the benefits of globalisation are more widely shared - making capacity-building all the more critical."

In 2006, Chinese Taipei also donated USD 1 million to human security priorities including counter-terrorism and the promotion of secure trade, health security (including efforts to manage the pandemic influenza and HIV/AIDS), emergency preparedness and energy security.
