Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a unique forum established in 1989 with the vision of achieving stability, security and prosperity for the region through free and open trade and investment.

The APEC Secretariat, established on 5 February 1993 in Singapore, began operations in a temporary office premises located in Alexandra Point before moving to its permanent home, a seven-storey purpose-built office building at Heng Mui Keng Terrace, situated on the fringe of the National University of Singapore and Science Park, in close proximity to several international organisations and think-tanks.

Since its inception, the Secretariat staff strength has grown with APEC's expanding membership and agenda, reflecting the latter's growing importance in the international arena. The Executive Director leads a dynamic and committed team of over 50 professional and support staff members, who come from APEC's 21 Member Economies which span four continents. Work at the Secretariat is broad, varied and challenging. Staff members support APEC's more than 30 Committees/Working Groups/Task Force/Dialogues and are exposed to a wide range of issues in the areas such as trade and investment liberalisation, human resource development, intellectual property rights, sustainable development, climate change and telecommunications. They are also engaged in project management as well as corporate management including Finance, Communications and Public Affairs, Information Technology and Administration.

The Secretariat has embarked on a number of institutional reforms to strengthen its capabilities over the last years. A Project Management Unit was formed in 2007 to oversee and coordinate management of APEC projects. A Policy Support Unit was set-up in the following year to provide policy research. Since 2010, a fixed term Executive Director has been appointed to head the Secretariat.

The Secretariat will continue to provide the best possible support to APEC, which aims to make a lasting and positive difference to the lives of the 2.7 billion people living in the Asia-Pacific. To do so, it will continue to recruit the sharpest and most creative and committed women and men from the region, who share our core values, to join its ranks. Successful candidates will be offered a competitive remuneration package as well as the opportunity to work in an enriching multi-cultural environment.
